On Saturday April 21, 2012 I attended The Lucky Few Event hosted by Sharon Nicholas and the Federal Asian Pacific American Council at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California. The event was to honor the shipriders who participated in the evacuation of Saigon in April – May 1975. Among those in attendance were : Vice Admiral Adam Robinson Surgeon General of the Navy and Chief of the Navy Bureau of Medicine now retired, Capt Paul Jacobs USN Ret, Cdr Richard B. McKenna USN Ret, Mr. Jan Herman Naval Historian, Peter Schermerhorn President USS Kirk Association. The event kicked off at 3:00 PM beginning with the national anthem of South Vietnam and the American National Anthem and was followed by messages from keynote speakers including Adam Robinson, Capt Paul Jacobs, Cdr Richard McKenna, Kim Le who was rescued by the USS Kirk, Peter Schermerhorn, President of the USS Kirk Association, and Mr. Jan Herman, and two video clips from Richard Armitage, Former Deputy Secretary of State and Capt. There was cultural entertainment throughout the ceremony sponsored by the Federal Asian Pacific American Council which included Traditional Songs about the City of Saigon before the fall and various dances in traditional costumes of South Vietnam.

It was a highly emotional event and the final ceremony included Capt. Paul Jacobs handing over the last Flag of the Republic of South Vietnam.

A banquet followed after the conclusion of the ceremonies.
